What Is Cialis Used For?

Cialis contains tadalafil and belongs to a group of medicines called phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors. It’s prescribed to help men with specific sexual and urinary health issues.

Primary Uses

Cialis treats erectile dysfunction (impotence) in men – when you cannot get or maintain an erection suitable for sexual activity. It also treats urinary symptoms from benign prostatic hyperplasia, a common condition where the prostate gland enlarges with age, causing difficulty starting urination, feeling like the bladder doesn’t empty completely, and needing to urinate more frequently, even at night.

How It Works

For erectile dysfunction, Cialis works after sexual stimulation by helping blood vessels in the penis relax, allowing blood flow that improves erectile function. You and your partner still need foreplay – Cialis only works when you’re sexually aroused. For prostate symptoms, Cialis improves blood flow to and relaxes muscles of the prostate and bladder, which may reduce urinary symptoms.

Good to know: Cialis only treats erectile dysfunction when you are sexually aroused – it’s not an automatic response and requires natural sexual stimulation.

How to Take Cialis

Always take Cialis exactly as your doctor prescribed. You should not take Cialis more than once a day. Swallow one tablet whole with a full glass of water.

Dosage Instructions

For erectile dysfunction, Cialis can be taken two ways: On-demand dosing (10mg or 20mg) taken 30-60 minutes before anticipated sexual activity – not for daily use. Once-daily dosing (5mg) for men who anticipate frequent use (at least twice weekly) – allows erection when sexually stimulated anytime during 24 hours. For urinary symptoms from enlarged prostate: 5mg taken once daily. Kidney disease patients: 10mg maximum for on-demand use; once-daily not recommended for severe kidney problems. Liver disease patients: 10mg recommended; follow doctor’s advice for severe liver problems. No special dosing needed for elderly or diabetic patients.

Important: Never take once-daily dosing and on-demand dosing at the same time. Cialis can be effective for up to 36 hours for on-demand dosing.
