Inform any other healthcare professionals, including dentists and pharmacists, that you are on this medication. ABACAVIR/LAMIVUDINE VIATRIS contains abacavir, which can cause a severe allergic reaction known as hypersensitivity. This reaction can be life-threatening if treatment with abacavir-containing products is not discontinued. Research indicates that individuals with the HLA-B (type 5701) gene are more susceptible to this reaction. However, even without this gene, the risk remains. If you are aware of having this gene, inform your doctor before taking abacavir.
Common symptoms of this reaction include fever and skin rash. Other frequently observed symptoms are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, extreme fatigue, body aches, general malaise, headache, shortness of breath, sore throat, or cough. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact your doctor immediately for advice on whether to stop taking ABACAVIR/LAMIVUDINE VIATRIS. If your doctor is unavailable, seek urgent medical advice, such as visiting the nearest hospital’s emergency department, before taking the next dose.
Additional symptoms may include joint or muscle pain, neck swelling, or itchy skin. Occasionally, eye inflammation (conjunctivitis), mouth ulcers, tingling or numbness in the hands or feet, or low blood pressure may occur. These allergic reaction symptoms can arise at any point during treatment, typically within the first six weeks, and may worsen with continued use.
If you have experienced this severe reaction to ABACAVIR/LAMIVUDINE VIATRIS, never take this medication or any other product containing abacavir again, as it may lead to a life-threatening drop in blood pressure or death within hours. In rare cases, life-threatening hypersensitivity reactions have occurred when the medication was restarted in patients who previously reported only one symptom on the Alert Card before stopping. On very rare occasions, hypersensitivity has been reported upon restarting the medication in patients who had no prior symptoms.
If you have discontinued ABACAVIR/LAMIVUDINE VIATRIS for any reason, it is crucial to consult your doctor before resuming, especially if you suspect side effects from other medications or have another illness. Your doctor will assess whether any previous symptoms were related to this hypersensitivity reaction. If there is a possibility, you may be advised never to take ABACAVIR/LAMIVUDINE VIATRIS again. It is vital to adhere to this guidance.
If you are hypersensitive to ABACAVIR/LAMIVUDINE VIATRIS, return any unused tablets to your doctor or pharmacist for proper disposal. Patients with moderate kidney disease should be closely monitored due to an increased risk of certain side effects.
