Ringing in the New Year with Mixed Emotions
Ever since I took the reins of Muscle Media Magazine almost seven years ago, I have wrestled with how to introduce the New Year in our January issue… Being an eternal optimist, I like to emphasize the positives and, at the very least, acknowledge the negatives. But 2022 has certainly been a transition year with many changes in the Country and the World. I had one of my patients describe it as feeling like a weary prize-fighter awaiting (dreading) the bell for the next round. Just reeling after coming out of the COVID situation, we have had an election, alarming increases in the cost of living, the World Cup, and two back-to-back hurricanes. The “next round,” indeed…!

Optimism vs. Pessimism in Difficult Times
In my Private Practice, there have been many discussions about adopting either an optimistic or a pessimistic attitude when trying to weather turbulent times. You probably know some people in your various circles who, regardless of the prevailing social burdens, seem to remain positive.
But then, you probably also know of those who, even in the very best of times, are more comfortable in a dark room with no friends. I am often asked about which is “right”. Obviously, these illustrate the two extremes offering what I believe to be a false choice.
Where Are We in the Stages of Grief?
I have written before about the work of Dr. Kubler-Ross and her stages grief. Looking towards the “next round”, I believe that it depends upon how far through the stages you may have progressed. I have seen a few patients still stuck in the Denial stage, but most have processed beyond their initial reaction.
If I see any stages that might dominate, it would be Anger and Depression. I wrote about this several months ago and, unfortunately, it still appears to be the case. I find it curious that very few have progressed to Bargaining, and even fewer have made it through to Acceptance. Perhaps this is a reflection of the highly competitive nature of my patient base (elite athletes).
I’m not sure if it’s a clear reflection of optimism or pessimism but, perhaps, it does suggest an unwillingness to accept unacceptable situations and circumstances. Although Anger and Depression are the labels assigned by Dr. Kubler-Ross, I have seen them more accurately expressed as resistance and opposition.

Signs of Strength and Moving Forward
Having said that, I cannot help but feel some gusts of the winds of change (optimism?). My patients seem to be looking forward rather than back. I have had several admit that they feel wiser, or at least a bit more resilient as a consequence of the obstacles they have encountered. Getting back to the boxer metaphor, some seem to have endured the fight, and are now awaiting the decision. That doesn’t mean they’re done. It just means they’ve made it through this bout…
What’s Inside This Issue?
But, enough about that, what do we have to offer to welcome the New Year…?
Let’s start off with something “mindful”. Our resident entertainment expert, Anne, returns to explore some little-known dietary considerations to help nourish your brain. Whitnee examines the role nitrates play in a well-rounded nutritional plan. Anthony answers some questions about the popular keto diet. Continuing with the nutritional theme, Yushan leads us through the increasingly popular world of plant nutrition, while Spenser explains the benefits of whey protein.
Shifting gears a wee bit, Ciarra returns to explain the benefits of sauna bathing. Paige explores choosing a workout regimen that “fits” your lifestyle. Narvin explains the growing popularity of CrossFit workouts. Fisher (no relation…lol!) helps explain the contributing factors in muscle fatigue. Edwina researches the impact of exercising at specific times during the day. Kayla leads us through the effects of working out in atypical temperature environments.
David discusses the growing movement involving minimalist or shoeless running for cardio. Deon examines some of the unfortunate consequences of physical activity by explaining muscles strains. Kaitlyn continues the theme by looking into rotator cuff injuries (and I have some personal experience!). Finally, Jonathan talks about something we all desire: success…
Keep Going—You’ve Got This
Keep training through to the bell…
