What Is Eloctate Used For?

Eloctate contains efmoroctocog alfa, a factor VIII protein that helps your blood form clots properly. It's specifically designed for people with haemophilia A who don't have enough natural factor VIII to control bleeding.

Primary Uses

Eloctate is used to control and prevent bleeding episodes, routinely prevent and reduce the frequency of bleeding episodes, and reduce bleeding before, during, and after surgery in people with haemophilia A.

How It Works

People with haemophilia A lack sufficient factor VIII to control bleeding. Eloctate works by replacing factor VIII to enable blood to clot normally.

Not for Von Willebrand's Disease: Eloctate does not contain von Willebrand factor, so it is not suitable for use in Von Willebrand's disease.

How to Take Eloctate

Eloctate is given as a slow injection directly into your vein. It comes as a powder in a vial that must be mixed with the provided solvent before use. Your doctor will determine the right dose for you.

Dosage Instructions

Your doctor will decide what dose you will receive based on your individual need for replacement factor VIII therapy. The dose may change during your treatment. Mix the powder with the provided solvent only when ready to use. Do not shake when mixing as this can damage the medicine. After mixing, the solution should be clear to slightly rainbow-like and colorless. Do not inject if discolored, cloudy, or contains particles. If mixed but interrupted, you can keep the solution for up to 6 hours at below 30°C, protected from direct sunlight.

What If You Miss a Dose?

If you miss your dose at the usual time, use your dose as soon as you remember and resume your normal dosing schedule. Do not use a double dose to make up for the missed dose.

Important: Do not stop using Eloctate or change the dosage without checking with your doctor. Eloctate is for single use in one patient only.

Important Warnings

Before using Eloctate, make sure your doctor knows about all your medical conditions and medications. There are important safety considerations to discuss.

Who Should Not Take Eloctate

Do not use Eloctate if you have ever had an allergic reaction to Eloctate, efmoroctocog alfa, other factor VIII replacement factors, or any of the ingredients listed in the medication guide.

Medical Conditions to Discuss

Tell your doctor if you have any other medical conditions or take any other medicines. Your body can make antibodies called 'inhibitors' against Eloctate which may stop it from working properly. Eloctate may increase the risk of abnormal blood clots forming if you are at risk of developing blood clots.

Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Check with your doctor if you are pregnant or intend to become pregnant. There is no information on the use of Eloctate during pregnancy. Talk to your doctor if you are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed, as it is not known whether Eloctate passes into breast milk. Your doctor will discuss the risks and benefits in both situations.

Tell your doctor immediately: Contact your doctor right away if bleeding is not controlled after using Eloctate or if you become pregnant while on treatment.

Drug Interactions

Tell your doctor, Haemophilia Treatment Centre, or pharmacist about all medicines you are taking, including vitamins and supplements bought without a prescription.

Alcohol & Driving

Be careful when driving or using machinery until you know how Eloctate affects you.

Driving and Operating Machinery

Be careful before you drive or use any machines or tools until you know how Eloctate affects you.

Storage

Store Eloctate in the refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C. Do not freeze. Keep in the pack until ready to use, protected from light. If necessary, you can keep Eloctate out of the refrigerator for a single 6-month period at below 30°C in a cool, dry place. Record the date it was removed from refrigeration. Once mixed, keep at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 6 hours, protected from direct sunlight. Do not use after the expiry date or if packaging is damaged.

Overdose Information

If you think you or anyone else may have used too much Eloctate, seek urgent medical attention immediately. Contact your doctor, go to the Emergency Department at your nearest hospital, or phone the Poisons Information Centre (13 11 26 in Australia or 0800 764 766 in New Zealand), even if there are no signs of discomfort.
