Yoga Wear: Choosing Clothes for a Comfortable Class

Comfortable yoga clothes let you bend, reach and breathe without stopping to adjust your outfit. Start with pieces you already own. A few gentle movements can help you decide whether they will work for class before you buy anything new.
Think about the whole session: moving into poses, sitting still and getting to and from the studio. Choose clothes that feel comfortable through those changes. You do not need a matching set to get started.
How should yoga pants or shorts fit?

Check the fit while moving, not just while standing in front of a mirror. Use movements that are comfortable for you. That might mean a shallow squat, a forward fold or a gentle lunge.
Notice what happens at your waist and knees. Does the waistband dig in or slide down? Do the seams rub? Does the fabric pull when you bend? Try another size or cut if you keep having to adjust the clothes.
Leggings, stretchy shorts and looser trousers are all options. Check coverage when you bend under ordinary light. Fabric can look different when stretched. Choose what feels comfortable on your body.
What should you look for in a yoga top?

Reach overhead, lean forward and return to standing. Watch the neckline and hem. A top that shifts over your face or needs constant pulling down may distract you during class.
A closer fit may stay in place more easily. It should still feel comfortable around your ribs and shoulders and give you room to breathe. If you prefer a looser shirt, see whether a simple tuck feels comfortable.
If you wear a sports bra, choose support that suits you and the class. Try it with the top you plan to wear so you can check the outfit together.
Do you need shoes for a yoga class?

Ask the studio before buying yoga shoes. Footwear choices depend on the class, the surface and any support you need. If the session is barefoot, wear shoes for the journey and follow the instructor’s guidance when you arrive.
For an outdoor class, ask about the ground and what participants should bring. Check the instructions for that session rather than choosing a shoe because it looks sporty.
What yoga class clothing and layers should you bring?

Ask whether the room is heated and whether the class is active, gentle or mostly seated. That can help you plan what to wear and pack.
A removable layer can be useful when you expect to sit still. Check whether you need to bring a towel or other equipment. Keep the layer easy to take off and put back on.
Choose a practice that suits your needs as well as clothes that feel comfortable. NCCIH recommends learning with a qualified instructor. If you are pregnant or have an injury or health condition, talk with your healthcare provider and the instructor about your individual needs. Some poses or practices may need changes.
If you are new to yoga, avoid advanced practices such as headstands. Tell the instructor about your experience before the session begins.
How should you care for your yoga wear?
Read the garment’s care label before buying, especially if you want clothes you can wash with the rest of your workout kit. Follow its washing and drying instructions. Choose a care routine you can manage between the classes you plan to attend.
Before your next class, repeat the same comfortable movement check. Keep the pieces that stay in place and feel good, so you can give your attention to the practice.
